Research
My present work focuses on how stress in hens influences the behavioural and physiological development of the chicks hatching from their eggs. Within the present project we have shown that the maternal environment influences the corticosterone, androstenedione and estradiol content of incubating eggs. Other results indicate that injecting corticosterone into incubating eggs influences spatial learning and problem solving, imprinting, fearfulness, competative ability and growth in hens. Furthermore, several of these effects on progeny can be replicated if hens are are exposed to unpredictable environmental conditions. The effects on progeny appear to be mediated by altered gene expression patterns in the hypothalamus and hypofysis of treated parents and progeny and to be inherited through epigenetic mechanisms. |
