| BAKGRUNN OG ERFARING |
I graduated with my Ph.D from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 2001 by studying the molecular genetics of grain hardness in wheat. The work included a stay at the USDA-ARS Western Wheat Quality Lab in Pullman, WA and resulted in several widely cited publications on the role of the genes puroindoline a and b in determining the endosperm texture of wheat.
In 2001, I moved to Mexico and worked for three years as a post doc in the wheat breeding program at CIMMYT. Apart from being involved in the ongoing breeding activities, analyzing multilocational yield trials and conducting research on lodging resistance, my major responsibility became to organize and set up an international breeding effort on partial resistance to powdery mildew in wheat. Breeding for resistance to this disease had previously not been given much attention at CIMMYT due to the lack of natural epidemics in Mexico, although it is an important disease in many areas where CIMMYT-derived wheat varieties are grown. Widely adapted and high-yielding breeding lines with a high level of race non-specific resistance were identified through analysis of disease data from collaborators in more than 60 international locations, and subsequent testing of special nurseries in more than ten ‘hot spot’ areas in different parts of the world. These lines are now being used as a basis for development of new varieties with durable resistance to powdery mildew in international wheat breeding.
Since 2005, I have been working on the project “Norwegian wheat with durable resistance to powdery mildew”, which focuses on developing molecular markers for genes involved in partial resistance to powdery mildew in wheat.
