In December 2002, a group of people at Ås campus started a process which has resulted in the purchase of several pieces of equipment necessary for proteomics studies. The most important investment in infrastructure concerns two Bruker Mass Spectrometers (purchased in the end of 2003) which are specially suited for analysis of peptides, proteins and carbohydrates. This investement has been co-financed by the Agricultural University and MATFORSK, The Norwegian Food Research Institute, whereas additional equipment has been financed by the Norwegian Research Council. The equipment is located at and operated by IKBM.
The MS /proteomics platform is now being installed at IKBM in specially designed instrument rooms on the first floor of the new Biotechnologybuilding. The institute has appointed Dr. Morten Skaugen to run the facility. The aim is to establish a smooth-running facility for studies in proteomics and carbohydrate chemistry, which is accessible for internal and external users.
Most systems will be up and running before Easter 2004. The following major equipment will then be available:
Several proteomics projects are currently being initiated at IKBM and Ås campus, which will benefit from the new facilities. During development of these facilties, IKBM will be in close contact with national facilities in the field (e.g PROBE in Bergen).
Most of the projects employng proteomics technologies relate to bacterial genomics (lactic acid bacteria,
Streptococcus pneumoniae, bacterial plant pathogens) or to food chemistry (meat science, cereals, dairy products).
