eriod between circ. 1031 and 1265 fundamental political changes occurre=
d in the Iberian Peninsula. The fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1031 marked the beginning=
of Christian expansion, the division of Muslim territory and the real =
beginning of the reconquista. Castile-Le=F3n was the Christian kingdom that expanded most during =
the period, but it also experienced times of stagnation and regression =
due to inner strife and renewed strength on the Muslim side. Political =
changes in North Africa and the part=
icipation of the Almoravids and later the Almohads in the fight fo=
r the political hegemony of the peninsula, were to halt their expansion=
. In this period conflicts and networks contributed to the formation of=
the Christian and Muslim societies, and the interaction between them. =
=0D=0AThe aim =
of my PhD project is to shed light on fundamental structures governing =
the games of politics within Castile and Le=F3n and th=
e interaction with their Muslim neighbours. I will focus on how conflic=
ts and networks were used to build political power: How should one play the gam=
e of politics in order to achieve power, changes in power relations and=
territorial expansion? And: How di=
d conflicts and political networks form the meeting between Christian a=
nd Islamic culture on the Iberian Peninsula? The focus will be on the encounter between Castile-Le=F3n and =
the neighbouring Muslim states. Is it possible to trace continuity, var=
iations and changes with regard to conflict, the building of networks a=
nd power within this period? The main sources of the investigation will=
be a selection of chronicles from Castile=
-Le=F3n, and the chroniclers=92 presentation of these issues will be of=
central importance. My theoretical approach to the sources is influenc=
ed by legal anthropology.<=
