| Title: | Partitioning of soluble calcium in the Water Hyacinth- (Eichhornia Crassipes (Martius) Solms), in Lake Victoria, Uganda |
| Authors: | Tabuti, John Robert Stephen |

| Abstract: | ABSTRACT
An investigation of soluble calcium partitioning in organs of the water hyacinth was carried out from April 1996 to September 1996 along the shores of L. Victoria bordering Jinja town. Sampling of the water hyacinth was carried out
during the wet and dry seasons. The omplexometric method was used to determine the concentration of Ca in the water hyacinth. Calcium oxalate was determined from the acid extracts of the water hyacinth. The physico-chemical characteristics of the lake water were also studied. An Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was used to determine
the concentrations of the principal cations such as Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+. The pH and electrical conductivity of lake water were also determined.
The order of partitioning of Ca in decreasing magnitude in the different organs of the water hyacinth was leaf followed by rhizome, root, petiole and stolon in that order. In both young and mature plants the concentration of oxalate was highest in the leaves, followed b... |
