Subject didactics as a research and development (R & D) area at the Bachelor and Continuing Education Programmes within Nursing at Sør-Trøndelag University College, 2007- 2010 Subject didactics in nursing education and the nursing profession
Currently in the process of construction, subject didactics constitutes a Faculty of Nursing priority area. The Faculty has set up a Subject Didactics Committee, which has its own Resource Group. The Committees mandate is to contribute towards strengthening the quality of the nursing education programmes, and to promote R & D activities. Furthermore, the Committee is to serve as an advisory body for the Dean; and the Committee may on its own accord take the initiative to promote issues or concerns within the area of subject didactics.
The following definition of what the area of subject didactics may include serves as a basis for the work undertaken by the Subject Didactics Resource Group:
Subject didactics consists of all the reflections one may associate with a subject and the teaching of this subject that may lead to increased knowledge about the nature of the subject, the legitimacy of the subject, and increased knowledge about how the subject can be learned, taught and developed (Lorentzen et al. 1998:7/Aase 1990 in Norges Forskningsråd [The Research Council of Norway], KUPP [Knowledge development in professional education and practice], p. 51).
The promotion of research-based knowledge, insight and understanding of how the subject of nursing is taught, learned and developed is a vitally important part of the tasks undertaken by the Resource Group.
Didactic challenges within the subject(s) of nursing are related to the student, the teacher and supervisor, the clinical placement (practice) supervisor and the external examiner. At the Faculty of Nursing these concerns are covered by the bachelor programme as well as to all the continuing education programmes within nursing, where the legal framework provided by the government (the general plan and regulations for the 3-year training programme in nursing) as well as the curriculum of the different courses will set the parameters, requiring research-based insight into the didactics of the subjects feeding into nursing. Furthermore, the subject didactics related to nursing also take in the actual practices of nursing during clinical placement and as a profession. The objective of the R & D challenge in relation to nursing-subject didactics is to promote a professional attitude towards the practices of the nursing profession.
The students learning process during their clinical placements in the specialist and municipal health services is of great significance. A critical factor is the organisation of the framework conditions for learning during the practical placements a factor that necessitates a scholarly insight into the subject didactics of nursing.
Approaches to the subject didactics of nursing are a matter of how nursing is communicated as a subject and discipline, a matter of the design of the subject of nursing as it is taught to the students.
Responsible for the subject area: Associate Professor Undis Benum
