The course is a usage course for international students at the University of Oslo. It consists of grammar, pronunciation and practical English usage. The grammar component gives insight into a standard description of the English language, which will help the students use the language correctly. The pronunciation component gives insight into the basics of English phonetics, and is intended to help the students achieve a clear pronunciation. The aim is to raise the students' awareness of, and level and proficiency in, correct English usage, so that they can communicate correctly and efficiently in an academic context.
The students will improve their proficiency in spoken and written English. The focus is on English in an academic context, so that the students' increased competencce will enable them to gain greater benefit from other courses taught in English at the University of Oslo.
This course is intended for exchange students. It is not available to students with "enkeltemnestudierett". International students who wish to take this course must send an e-mail to Helle Linné Eriksen (h.l.eriksen@ilos.uio.no) stating their background in and knowledge of English, whether they have studied English at high school or university level etc.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
Admission to the course is required.
The course assumes a basic knowledge of English.
Cannot be taken by students who have already taken ENG0101/ENG1111.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week for 14 weeks. The teaching is compulsory (80 % required attendance). There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own.
Within specified dates students are asked to submit 3 obligatory assignments. Dates for submission will be announced at the beginning of the semester. The papers have to be approved before the student may take the exam. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current two consecutive semesters after the course is given.
There will be a 4-hour written exam at the end of the term.

English
The results will be available on the StudentWeb within three weeks of the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
