The objective of this 4000-module is to introduce you to ‘appraisal theory’, which is a development of the interactive dimension of M. Halliday’s functional grammar – Systemic Functional Grammar.
‘Appraisal theory’ deals with the use of evaluative linguistic forms that reveal how the text and thus also how senders express personal attitudes and values and how they react to and relate to other people’s statements of value and belief. The use of evaluative language is important for the reader’s position when it comes to accepting of rejecting the text’s underlying ideology.
