This is a master's course in English language history. It will be held that observations are not independent of explanatory frameworks: descriptions of events, the things that are to be explained, are themselves the product of theory. Problems and case-studies will be taken from phonology, morphology and syntax. Some recent claims in respect of language contact will also be considered.
The aims of this course are twofold: first, to examine some of the ways in which languages change, with detailed illustration from English; second, to consider how such changes may be said to be explained.
80-group in English language. The student must have been accepted into the master's degree program in language studies. Admission to the course is required.
It is recommended that the students have taken ENG2154, ENG2155 or ENG2156.
There will be two class hours per week throughout the semester, 28 hours in all. Students are expected to participate by contributing to discussions in class, handing in written work and presenting topics orally. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own.
Term paper, 10 standard pages. A draft is handed in after the two-week break, and commented on. The final version will be handed in by a set date at the end of term.
Maks. 10 studenter. Med et noe utvidet pensum vil emnet kunne telle 15 studiepoeng (hovedemne) i gammel studieordning.
