The module gives an introduction to the linguistic and stylistic analysis of various kinds of texts, such as literary texts, spoken discourse, academic texts, newspaper texts and advertisements. It contains a brief introduction to functional grammar.
The objectives of this course are to increase students’ insights by showing (i) what genre conventions underlie different kinds of discourse, (ii) how different kinds of texts are constructed to create meaning and to achieve special effects, (iii) how texts convey attitudes and evaluation, (iv) how texts address the reader/listener, and (v) what the main differences are between spoken and written discourse.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
Admission to the language master program, LAP or an other relevant master program.
This course overlaps with ENG2152 - Varieties of English Texts.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week in 14 weeks. Half-way through the semester there is a period of one (autumn term) or two (spring term) reading weeks without teaching, to be used for individual study and work on assignments. Students are supposed to attend the course regularly. 80% attendance in the course is compulsory. Students are required to hand in one obligatory paper (5 standard pages) by a stated deadline during the semester.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. Final marks are awarded on the basis of a four-hour written exam.
Exams held previously are available on: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/ENG4152/Eksamensoppgaver/Tidligere%20gitte%20eksamensoppgaver?vrtx

The results will be published on the Studentweb within three weeks after the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
