The first part of this course is an introduction to the study of semantics on both word and sentence level. The second part gives insights into theories of language use, particularly the part of pragmatics dealing with how you communicate more than you literally say or write.
The aim is to provide insight into the relationship between language and meaning on word, sentence and utterance level. Semantic theories give the students an understanding of different aspects of meaning in words, how they can be described, and how grammar and syntax contribute to meaning. Knowledge of pragmatic theory helps students to understand how language users achieve their goals in verbal interaction with others.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
Students have to be admitted to Master studies in the Language Program or LAP.
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English. The course assumes ENG1100 - English Grammar, an introduction or similar knowledge.
This course overlaps with ENG2157 - Semantics and Pragmatics.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. At the middle of the semester there is a period with no teaching, which will be used for self-study and work with assignments. 80% attendance is required.
Exams are to be submitted to Classfronter. Read here: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/eksamensinstruks.html
Each student is responsible for being able to submit exams to CF. Students who do not know how to use CF, must attend one of Student-IT's courses.
A written assigment has to be handed in by a set date and approved by the course teacher for the student to be allowed to take the exam. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. The exam consists of a three-day take home exam.
Previous exams:
http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/ENG4157/Eksamensoppgaver/Eksamensoppgaver.xml
Results will be available on the StudentWeb within three weeks of the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
