The course gives an introduction to varieties of English in a global perspective, including English as a second language and as an international means of communication. The teaching draws on the following electronic text corpora: the ICAME Corpus Collection and the International Corpus of English.
The aim is to give students insight into the ways in which English varies in different parts of the world and stimulate them to reflect on problems connected with English as a global language. Through problem-oriented exercises they will learn how to use electronic text corpora in the analysis of language variation.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
The student must have been accepted into the master's degree programme in language studies or the teacher education programme (LAP).
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English
This course overlaps with ENG2163 - Global English.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own. 80% attendance is required.
Eksamensinnlevering foregår i Classfronter. Les her: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/eksamensinstruks.html
Det er den enkelte students ansvar å være i stand til å levere i CF. Studenter som ikke behersker CF, må gå på kurs hos Student-IT.
Two short papers are to be handed in during the course. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given.
The assessment is based on a term paper (abt. 10 standard pages).
The results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks of the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
