This course provides a broad introduction to the English renaissance and offers a possibility of specializing in drama (Shakespeare, Jonson and Webster) or in poetry (Spenser and Milton).
The student should acquire a broad understanding of the most important literary trends in renaissance England as well as an ability to see these trends as connected with the ideas and socio-political development of the period.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
The student must have been accepted into the master's degree programme in literary studies or the teacher education programme (LAP).
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English
This course overlaps with ENG2301 - The English Renaissance: Texts and Context (Literature and Civilization).
The course is taught throughout the semester with two hours per week, 28 hours in all. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly
Students must turn in an essay (app. 5 standard pages, 11.500 characters) by a stated deadline during the semester.
The essay must be approved before the final exam, consisting of a three-day take-home exam.
Eksamensinnlevering foregår i Classfronter. Les her: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/eksamensinstruks.html
Det er den enkelte students ansvar å være i stand til å levere i CF. Studenter som ikke behersker CF, må gå på kurs hos Student-IT.
The result can be found at the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
