This is an introductory, survey course in English-language feminist fiction from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Students will study a selection of novels and short stories that focus on women’s lives and reflect on what it means to be a woman and a feminist from various sexual, racial, class, and national perspectives. The course will consider the development and thematics of feminist fiction and its contribution to the development of new narrative techniques.
Students will learn about English-language feminist fiction, its thematics, periodization, and narrative strategies. Further, they will learn to analyze literary texts that focus on gender.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
The course can be taken as a first course.
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English.
This course overlaps with ENG2323 - Women Writing: Feminist Fiction in English.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. Eksamensinnlevering foregår i Classfronter. Les her: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/eksamensinstruks.html
Det er den enkelte students ansvar å være i stand til å levere i CF. Studenter som ikke behersker CF, må gå på kurs hos Student-IT.
The course is based on portfolio evaluation. Students will submit a portfolio containing a seven page essay
on a topic chosen by the student and approved by the teacher. The evaluation also contains a final two-hour in-class exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
