This is an introductory course in reception studies. The course will involve close readings of primary texts and investigations into their historical reception. This will be combined with discussions of key theoretical contributions to the field. Working from the premise that all texts are historically situated and acquire new meanings in new contexts, we will explore the reception history of a number of different texts from different historical periods.
To develop an awareness of how texts always appear in particular historic and material forms. To understand more of the multiple lives of texts. To develop critical and analytical skills through encountering the changes of meaning that texts are exposed to when they appear in new contexts, be it diachronically (historically) and/or synchronically (across national borders and in new languages).
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.

The course will consist of a double class a week during the semester, altogether 28 hours. There is one week without teaching in the middle of the semester which is for independent study and essay writing. Students are required to participate actively in class.
Students must turn in an essay (app. 5 standard pages, 11.500 characters) by a stated deadline during the semester.
The essay must be approved before the final exam, consisting of a three-day take-home exam.
Eksamensinnlevering foregår i Classfronter. Les her: http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/ilos/eksamensinstruks.html
Det er den enkelte students ansvar å være i stand til å levere i CF. Studenter som ikke behersker CF, må gå på kurs hos Student-IT.
The result can be found at the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
