The course consists of four parts: (1) methods and practices in writing a thesis in literary studies, (2) building a bibliography, (3) principles of textual criticism, and (4) the ethics of literary research.
The student is to gain an understanding of the basic prerequisites, ideals, and conditions of literary research and thus be better prepared to write a thesis.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
The student must have been accepted into the master's degree program in literary studies. Admission to the course is required.
No specific requirements. Normally graduate students in English-language literature will take this course in the same semester as the course "Introduction to Anglo-American Literary Theory," that is to say, in the first or second semester of their master's degree.
5 credits against LIT4000 - Litteraturvitenskapelig forskningspraksis.
One double hour a week for seven weeks in the second half of the semester. Instruction in bibliographical searches is conducted in collaboration with the University Library (UB). Compulsory attendance at least five of the seven sessions.
Second part of the semester.
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.
Portfolio assessment: every student turns in a portfolio that contains 5-6 pages (max. 10). The exercises are formulated in conjunction with the teaching. The portfolio is graded by the course instructor on a pass/fail basis where the two exercises count equally.
English
The results will be found on the StudentWeb three weeks after the exam is completed.
Students are awarded either a passing or failing grade. The pass/fail scale is applied as an independent scale with only two possible results.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who have failed an exam and students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
