Over the last two decades several European countries have developed programmes for artistic research at PhD level. Within the academic context there has been an on-going discussion of what this entails and how it develops the artistic field. Over time this debate has lost some of its urgency although it still remains important to investigate the role that research, theoretical discourse, texts and presentations has for the practising artist. Do they represent tools for a more profound understanding and for communication; are they marketing tools; or yet another material that artists embrace in their practice?
