In 1966, the active classification concept was introduced.
This meant, among other things, that:
DNV actively sought to ban unsafe ships in IMO (the International Maritime Organisation)
DNV sought to be more active in marketing ship classification
DNV participated during the design-phase to incorporate safety in the basic design
Formal safety assessment (FSA) was introduced in the design phase
