Introduction to DNV, course no. 2001

Transport

DNV Research - is an independent business unit within DNV

DNV Research's primary objective is to build new knowledge and know-how for DNV and to contribute towards the renewal of DNV's future services. This provides our customers with the best possible services.

DNV Research carries out applied research aiming at developing new knowledge and experience in technology areas that are of strategic importance in achieving improved competitiveness and a greater business advantage. DNV Research is currently conducting five research programmes.

Transport

At stake: Traffic delays, pollution and loss of reputation!

The transport programme pursues the development and integration of novel transport solutions that simplify the life of industry and citizens.

It adds knowledge to such topics as safety, security, pollution, quality, health and the environment. Risk-based assessments, input to regulatory regimes, environmental services and systematic decision making are important contributions. The programme is organised around three different themes:

•        Safer transport

•        Greener transport

•        Faster transport

Bio-risk Management

Biological risks represent unique challenges. The bio-risk programme is developing a structured and systematic framework to meet these challenges.

Using a science-based, interdisciplinary, transparent and inclusive approach, we are developing qualitative, quantitative and risk management methods. These new services will help build trust across stakeholder groups and provide support for decision-makers in the public and private sectors. The bio-risk programme is focusing on the following areas:

•        Environmental risks posed by gene- modified organisms

•        Decision-making support for food production/ manufacturers

•        Invasive species/ballast-water risks

Organisation of the Future

This programme aims to identify challenges facing organisations of the future and to explore and enhance DNV services that are capable of helping future customers to meet these challenges. It is currently active in the following three areas:

•        E-organisations - to help DNV customers benefit from IT-induced business reconfigurations, mainly through business- process redesign, business-network redesign and a focus on human aspects related to changes in business processes.

•        Corporate social responsibility (CSR) - to help DNV customers meet changing stakeholder expectations by concretising elements of CSR, such as human and labour rights, corporate governance, corruption and sustainability.

•        Mastering ICT - to help DNV customers master ICT through managing risk and exploiting opportunities provided by their business-critical infrastructure.

Lightweight and Multifunctional Materials

The technology revolution in nano- technologies opens up a wide range of possible research topics for lightweight and multifunctional materials.

The current focus is on research related to lightweight structures (steel sandwich and composite superstructures), new joining methods (adhesive bonding and hammer peening) and the inspection and repair of sandwich structures. Nanotechnology will become the new main research topic. The research will focus on exploiting nano- technologies to provide DNV with new technologies, skills and networks to develop new markets and services and to renew its current service portfolio. Promising areas include:

•        Surface technologies

•        Nanoparticles

Energy and Resources

The programme pursues robust solutions for managing the wide picture of risks and reliability associated with the future energy and natural resource systems in industry and society.

Key challenges are to create and apply knowledge and technology that contribute to sustainable development in terms of economic, social and environmental added value. Attention is paid to the secure supply of oil and gas, as well as to clean, new and renewable energy. Attention is also given to mitigating climate change and harmful environmental emissions, the responsible use and reuse of natural resources like clean water, as well as the optimal management of industry assets and production processes. The research and development projects are grouped in three areas:

•        Industrialising sustainable development

•        Energising the future

•        Optimising the service life of assets and products
