Biomedical Laboratory Science

Duration:
3 years

Degree:
Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Science

Entry requirements:
Minimum college entrance requirements. Additional requirements:
Mathematics, 2 or 3 yrs (2MX/2MY/3MZ) and one of the following: 2BI (Biology - 2 yr.), 2FY (Physics - 2 yr.) or 2 KJ (Chemistry - 2 yr.). All applicants must have had 5 hour/week in natural sciences.

Aims and objectives:
- To provide a good theoretical and practical education for students who plan to work within the field of biomedical laboratory science.
- To develop knowledge and skills in accordance with the society's demand for biomedical laboratory science
- To qualify the students for official approval as a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist

Examples of typical fields of work after graduation:
Work in medical laboratories, such as clinical chemistry, pathological and microbiological laboratories, and bloodbanks. The employers can be hospitals, health care centres or private laboratories. Other candidates find employment in teaching, research, veterinary medicine, food safety control, and pharmaceutical industry and as product specialists at companies selling medical equipment.

Teaching methods:
In this programme, the college puts emphasis on student active teaching methods. This includes laboratory exercises at the college, group work, literature search, research projects, problem oriented and problem based learning, and written and oral presentation of the students` owns work.
Some of the classes are compulsory, which require that the students have attended at least 80% of the classes:
- all laboratory exercises, including all activities related to the exercise such as written reports and written projects
- all external practicums (hospitals, medical centres)
- some classes (to be announced at the beginning of the programme) that do not have final exams.

Structure and activities:
The biomedical laboratory science programme is a three-year programme based on the framework provided by the Department of Church, Education and Research (1998). Each year of study is divided into two semesters.

Structure:
75 ECTS credits natural science studies, consisting of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, and different areas of Chemistry and Biology.
15 ECTS credits social studies, consisting of communication, ethics and scientific research methods
90 ECTS credits medical classes, consisting of medical laboratory technology, medical laboratory science, and quality control. 60 ECTS credits of the medical classes are laboratory exercises and practicums, of which 21 ECTS credits are spent at a hospital laboratory.
