Prepare for English I

PREPARE FOR ENGLISH I!

Studying English at university level means that you will do a fair amount of reading, especially in the Literature section of the course. While you are likely to find most of it fun and interesting, a few of the longer novels, like White Teeth, Pride and Prejudice and Huckleberry Finn, are impossible to read through quickly, in particular if you are not used to reading in English. If you find time to read a few of the longer books in the summer this could make your studies a bit easier: there will be a great deal for you to do anyway!

Below is a list of the novels that we study in the Cultural Studies section of English I. If not already available from the SIF book store in Alta they can be ordered on the internet. Please make sure to purchase the right edition, i.e. the one indicated in the literature list, as this will be important to our work in the classroom.

Zadie Smith: White Teeth (Penguin, 2002- ISBN: 0140297782).

Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice (Penguin, 1996 - ISBN: 0140434267).

Mark Twain: Huckleberry Finn (Penguin, 1994 - ISBN: 0140620648).

English I and II (the two parts of the ‘årsenhet’) can be studied with or without Didactics as a component. While students in the Teacher’s Training programme as a rule take the Didactics option, other students may also want to opt for it. We really appreciate if you take time to make up your mind about this either before or during our first meeting!

English I students who do not study our Didactics option will read either:

(American) Willa Cather: My Ántonia (Dover, 1994 - ISBN: 0486282406).

or:

(British) Hardy, Thomas: The Woodlanders (Penguin, 1994 ISBN: 0140620907).

A short story compendium will be available from the University College bookshop at the beginning of the Fall semester. Look at the Student Resources sections of the English Department homepage (address below) for study aids
