Health and insurance
National Health Insurance
Students from the Nordic Countries, UK and Northern Ireland benefit from a reciprocal agreement with Norway, and do not need social security from their own country. Students from EU and EEA countries must have social security covering from their home country.
Other students must contact the Councelling service at OAS and fill in a form entitling them to social security coverage if their stay is less than a year. After this, one automatically becomes insured under the National Insurance Scheme called Folketrygden. The National Insurance Scheme does not apply to students before they register at school or after they have completed their studies, or during travel abroad in the course of the semester. For this private insurance is needed. Furthermore, the National Insurance Scheme does not cover dental care, or illness contracted before coming to Norway.
National Identification
If you are staying in Norway for six months or longer, you need to have a National Identification Number which consists of an 11-digit number, comprising your date of birth followed by five more digits. By filling in a special form called Notification to the National Registry of move to Norway from Abroad, and submitting it to the relevant authorities i.e. Folketrygden together with a copy of your passport and proof of residence permit, you will get a National Identification Number
Preventive action against MRSA and tuberculosis
Meticillin Resistent Staphylococcus Aureus
Incoming students from outside the Nordic countries who during the exchange period will have clinical placements in a Norwegian hospital etc must be screened for MRSA on arrival.
Tuberculosis
All exchange students having clinical placements in their exchange program must have a BCG test done during the previous year.
