Research interests

My research focuses on 19th and 20th century European cultural history, geographically in particular on Norway, the Arctic and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Thematically I concentrate on cultural heritage and identity, public history (museums and archives), travelling/tourism and expeditions, polar history and history of science. A common denominator has been the production and negotiation of identities in local, national and transnational contexts, with a focus on representation and discourse. Methodologically and theoretically I have worked with discourse analysis, intermedia and multimedia approaches, theories of nationalism, identity and representation, museology, archival science, postcolonial theory and theories of space/place.

• travelling and tourism in Europe since 1800
• history of science, polar history, polar expeditions, cultural perceptions of the northern lights
• cultural heritage, museum history, archives, exhibition analysis
• nationalism, national identity & language
