BY5206 Roads, Water and Drainage

BY5206
About this Course
Code:
BY5206
ECTS:
10.00
Level:
Bachelor
Duration of this Course:
1 semester

Prerequisites

Admission requirements.

Course Objectives

The student should:

  • be able to describe and explain the relationships between the various road standards (dimensioning classes) and line parameter values.
  • be able to choose parameter values and determine geometric line values according to the requirements in the handbooks H017 and H265.
  • be able to dimension the road’s superstructure according to H018 and know the characteristic values for the main materials for road building and in the underground, including mass calculations and mass transport.
  • be able to dimension the drainage and flood systems and choose solutions for draining the road system with ditches, tanks and pipes; that is, a simple introduction to water drainage systems.
  • be able to describe the effect of the traffic on the environment and traffic safety
  • be familiar with the various technical construction solutions for road-building
  • know the concepts related to the construction and social costs of road-building
  • be familiar with road-related technical equipment and the operation and maintenance of the road-system

Learning Methods

Lectures will be given on topics involving roads, traffic and water drainage systems.

There will be an individual practical assignment to practice the central concepts in these themes.

There will be at least one field trip to a large road-construction site arranged through the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. It is a requirement that the course BY5106 Road Planning is taken parallel to this course.

Course Description

The course is a basic introduction to road building with stress on the drainage system with ditches, tanks and piping and the dimensioning principles associated with both roads and the water drainage system. In addition, the course will consider the influence of traffic on the environment and society as a whole. Basic concepts about both construction costs and social costs will be considered. Technical equipment for the operation and maintenance of the road system will also be mentioned.

Road plans affect the premises for other physical land use plans and the course will examine the connection between the various technical fields associated with regulation plans, roads and water drainage systems.

Assessment Methods

Written examinations related to the lecture topics, two course component examinations during the course, each counting for 20% of the final grade, and a final examination counting for 60%. Individual grades will be given.
