One semester
Prerequisites
Basic process modelling.
Course Objectives
The students will learn systems theory of dynamic systems, and methods and tools for design and simulation of process control systems.
Learning Methods
Lectures. Theoretical exercises. Computer exercises. Working in groups on laboratory and simulation assignments, involving report writing and plenary presentation.
Course Description
Importance of control engineering for solving process and environmental problems. Mathematical modelling of physical processes. System theory of dynamic systems. PID control. Cascade control. Feedforward control. Predictive control. Control structures for industrial processes. Logical and sequential control using PLCs. Automation technology. Using LabVIEW for analysis, design, simulation, and implementation. Introduction to HYSYS simulations of industrial plants.
Assessment Methods
Evaluation (final grade) is based on a group assignment (20% weight, common grade for all students in the group), an individual assignment (20% weight), and an individual written examination (60% weight). All these three parts must be passed to get a final grade better than F.
