Master
One semester
3-year BSc Engineering or equivalent
The course gives an introduction to combustion theory, hazard assessment and environmental aspects of combustion
Lectures and tutorials
The course covers the following topics: World energy consumption, thermochemistry, mass transfer, stoichiometry, chemical equilibrium, flame temperature, reaction kinetics, laminar premixed flames, burning jets, turbulent flames and combustion of droplets. Physical models used for hazard assessment in safety impact studies such as jet and pool fires and dust and gas explosions are presented. CFD codes for gas explosion simulations are introduced. Case histories from the process and the off-shore industry are used as examples. The formation of combustion-derived pollutants are discussed.
Mid-term test 30%; individual, written final examination counts 70%.
