Course content

Seismic data acquisition. Seismic sources (land and marine), sensors and recording equipment. Environmental aspects related to seismic acquisition. Borehole seismic. Seabed seismic. Seismic processing. Three-dimensional seismic exploration. Seismic imaging techniques and analysis of seismic data.

Learning outcome

Ingress:
The students should know how seismic data are acquired, processed and exploited.

Knowledge:
The students should understand the basic principles of seismic data acquisition, and how to assess critical acquition parameters. They should know the most crucial steps in seismic processing, and finally know how the final processed data are used for exploration and production of hydrocarbons.

Skills:
The students should know how to derive and apply basic equations that are used in acquisition and processing of seismic data. they should know how to perform a simple processing of 2-dimensional seismic data.

General competence:
The students should understand the basic principles used in seismic imaging, and realize similarities and differences to for instance medical imaging techniques. They should learn how to use self critical analysis methods and to present scientific work to others.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Exercises in datalab. Lessons are based on project, where the project consists of processing a seismic data set. The project work counts for 40% of the final grade. The lectures are held in English if international master's students attend. If the teaching is given in English, the examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
