International

You can contact the police anywhere in Norway, but after interview at the place where you first report, you will be transported as an asylum-seeker to the police immigration unit in Oslo. The police will undertake a formal registration of your asylum application. The decision on your case will be made by the UDI, or if necessary by the Immigration Board (UNE). More information on rules and current practise on the UDI website.

Collection of documentation

In certain kinds of cases such as visa applications, family immigration cases, applications for work permit etc., it will sometimes be necessary for the police to get confirmation of the information provided in the individual application. In some of these cases, therefore, it may be necessary to call individuals in for an interview. Other cases require a rather simpler investigation. The police send you a questionnaire with some questions that must be answered if the application is to be processed correctly.

Rejected application

A rejected application for example in connection with an asylum application, means that the person has to leave the country voluntarily within a given deadline. In order to assist these individuals, Norway currently has an agreement with the IOM (International Organization for Migration).

IOM assists individuals returning voluntarily to their homelands. Those who do not leave the country after a final refusal of their application for residence or asylum, will be forcibly transported to their homeland by the police, with or without escort. More information on the return programme is to be found on the UDI website.
