The University of Oslo offers a wide range of Ph.D. programmes. A Ph.D. degree is scheduled to take three years of full-time studies. It is made up of a training component equivalent to no less than 30 credits (1 semester of full-time study) and a dissertation. The dissertation is an independent piece of scientific work that meets international standards within its subject area. If the dissertation is approved, it has to be defended at a public disputation. For more information, see About the Ph.D. degree.
Disputations (In English and Norwegian)
The faculties evaluate the candidates for admission to doctoral study, so applications to a Ph.D.-programme should be submitted to the relevant faculty. All the faculties offer Ph.D.-programmes, but unfortunately not all of them have webpages in English about their Ph.D.-programmes. (For information about faculties without Ph.D. webpages in English, see the list of Units at the University of Oslo.)
For students from developing countries: Applicants to the 3-year doctoral programmes at all faculties at the University of Oslo may be considered for Quota Programme funding. For more information, see the Quota Programme - Doctoral Programmes.
