Special examination arrangements

If you have a disability or a health problem that entails significant inconvenience in an examination situation, you may be considered for special examination arrangements.

Examples of special arrangements

  • Extra time if your disability results in your working more slowly.
  • An opportunity to rest or move around during the examination. The period of rest shall not be used to work on answers to the examination.
  • Aids such as software and dictaphones. It is your responsibility to master the use of such aids. If this is an aid you do not usually use, you should try it out in advance.
  • Bench for resting, reading lamp, adjustable chair or table.
  • An opportunity to sit in a smaller room.

Special arrangements shall not be so extensive that they provide an advantage in relation to other students. This means that you will not necessarily be granted the arrangement you have applied for.

Application deadlines

  • 1 September for the Autumn semester

  • 1 February for the Spring semester

Send the documentation together with the application or within 3 weeks later.

Should you become acutely ill or suffer an injury after the deadline, you must contact the faculty's information centre as soon as possible.

Exemption: For medicine students and 1 semester and joint term clinical nutrition/dentist students, the deadline is four weeks before the exam.

How to apply? (Application form)

Students with dyslexia or long term disabilities

You can apply for special examination arrangements for all study at UiO if you have dyslexia or long term disabilities. You must document that the disability will last for minimum two years.

  1. Fill in an application form (pdf).
  2. Ask for a documentation on disability from your doctor/specialist or a documentation on dyslexia from a speech therapist/specialist.
  3. If your application concerns long-term disabilities, then your doctor/specialist must fill out the following form: Form for documentation (pdf).

If your application is accepted, you need not apply again for special arrangements for the same type of disability while studying at University of Oslo. Special arrangements for specific exams may differ due to variation in examination type and/or length, as well as in accordance with the academic requirements of a given subject.

Students with short term disabilities

You must apply every semester and documentation must be attached each time.

  1. Fill in an application form (pdf).
  2. Ask your doctor/specialist to fill in the documentation form (pdf).

The documentation should outline which disadvantages the student has in an examination situation and which kind of special arrangement can compensate for these disadvantages.

If you are taking courses and will have examinations at several faculties, you must send the application and attached documentation to each of the faculties.
