English proficiency required for master's degree admission
Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English by taking one of the following internationally recognised tests.
- The exemptions and minimum scores are revised for the 2016/2017 admission.
- For admission to master's programmes starting in the autumn semester 2015 and the spring semester 2016 it is sufficient to document the old English proficiency requirements.
Programmes with special English requirements:
Master's degree programmes in English Language and English Literature, American and British studies
Test results must not be older than two years. Please make sure that your test result is valid at the time of application.

How to document test results
IELTS
Please upload the official copy of your test result. The University of Oslo will verify your test result online. It is currently not possible to submit test results with an IELTS institutional code.
TOEFL
Official test report forms must be sent directly to the University of Oslo from ETS. The TOEFL code number for the University of Oslo is 0756. If you upload a copy of your test result, please make sure that the results are also sent directly from ETS.
Pearson
Please send your score report to the University of Oslo through your Pearson account. We do not accept paper or PDF versions of PTE Academic score reports.
Exemptions
- Native speakers from UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia with completed secondary education from their home country.
- Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year's university studies in academic subjects with English as the language of instruction in UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.
- Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year of master's degree studies with English as the language of instruction in one of the Nordic countries or the Netherlands, or completed a bachelor's degree with English as the language of instruction in one of the Nordic countries or the Netherlands.
- Applicants who have passed University of Cambridge exams, Proficiency (CPE) or Advanced (CAE), or First, with the grade A.
- Applicants who has completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme with English at Higher Level (HL) with the minimum score of 4.
