Application deadlines
- 1 March: EU/EEA/Swiss applicants – application procedure
- 1 March/15 April: Nordic citizens and applicants with a permanent or renewable residence permit in Norway – application procedure
- 1 December: Non-EU/EEA applicants – application procedure
Admission requirements
Admission to master's degree studies requires:
- Higher Education Entrance Qualification and a completed bachelor's degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor's degree. Applicants with foreign education, please refer to the country list.
- a specialization defined by the programme
- a minimum grade average of C (in Norwegian scale) or equivalent from the specialization in your degree.
- a language requirement documented by one of the tests/exams below:
a) Passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) in Norwegian upper secondary school with a minimum grade of 4 (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or alternatively passed examination in English from second and/or third school year, or
b) An internationally recognised English language proficiency test.
Required specialization
The admission requirement is a completed bachelor's degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor's degree and a minimum of 30 credits gender courses in dept or included in the BA.
The grade point average (GPA) must be C or better in this manner:
For students from the Gender Equality variant on the BA-programme at the University of Oslo, the grade point average will be taken from their in depth study courses in Gender Studies (80KFL) equal to 80 credits.
For other students:
The grade point average and counting of grade points are made on the basis of 80 credits as follows
- 30 credits gender courses (KFL1010, KFL1020, KFL2010 ).
- the best grades in the in depth study courses, amounting to 50 credits.
The programme complies with the general admission rules at the Faculty of Humanities.

Gender Studies can include courses with a gendered perspective, such as:
- basic concepts, discussions and current issues in Gender Studies or Women Studies
- history of feminism
- feminist theory
- masculinity studies
- queer studies
- gender and health, gender and development, gender and environmental studies
- gender equality
- For students with bachelor from UiO such as: KFL1010, KLF1020 and KFL2010

Ranking of applicants
For students from the Gender Equality variant on the BA-programme at the Univiersity of Oslo, the grade point average will be taken from their in depth study courses in Gender Studies (80KFL) equal to 80 credits.
For other students:
The grade point average and counting of grade points are made on the basis of 80 credits as follows
- 30 credits gender courses (KFL1010, KFL1020, KFL2010 ).
- the best grades in the in depth study courses, amounting to 50 credits.
Applicants who can not be ranked according to their grade average, will be ranked on the basis of an individual assessment.
Recognition of prior education
If you have previous higher education, you may apply for specific recognition of this education as part of your degree. Education from both Norwegian and non-Norwegian higher education institutions may be recognised. Recognition depends upon whether the education meets the specific requirements of your degree.
