Admission

Students at UiO must apply for courses in StudentWeb.

International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution.

The following courses must be taken earlier than the first mandatory laboratory in FYS1120:

For students taking FYS1120 Autumn 2015 or later, to have FYS1120 included in your degree you must first pass the following HSE courses:

For students who completed FYS1120 between autumn 2012 and spring 2015 – you cannot have FYS1120 included in a degree before following HSE courses are passed:

  • MNHMS0015 - Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) (discontinued) or HMS0501 - Safety and the Physical Environment and HMS0502 Positive Learning Environment and HMS0507 Fire Safety
  • MNHMS0010LS - Introduction to Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or MNHMS0020LS - In-depth Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or HMS0503 - Laboratory Safety

For further information se website for transitional arrangements between old and new HSE courses

Recommended previous knowledge

MAT1100 - Calculus, MAT1110 - Calculus and linear algebra, FYS-MEK1110 - Mechanics. MAT1120 - Linear algebra should be taken together with FYS1120.

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap with FYS1120L - Electromagnetism

10 credits overlap against FY101.

Teaching

The course extends over a full semester with 8 hours of teaching per week (lectures and problem solving). The course includes 2 compulsory exercises and lab work.

To attend mandatory laboratory classes it is required that the following courses must be taken earlier than the first compulsory laboratory in FYS1120:

You will need to provide documentation that you have passed HMS0503 and HMS0505 when you attend the first mandatory lab.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

The two compulsory exercises and lab work must be passed in order to take the final exam. One written midterm exam that counts about 25% of the final grade. Final written 4-hour exam (primo December) that counts 75%. Letter grade.

Detailed information about examinations at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences can be found here

Examination support material

Angell/Øgrim og Lian: Fysiske størrelser og enheter. Rottman: Matematisk formelsamling. Approved calculator.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Re-scheduled exams are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who:

  • can document a valid reason for absence from the regular exam (e.g. illness before or during the exam)
  • withdraw during the exam
  • do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.

Read more about re-scheduled exams.

Evaluation

Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, periodic evaluation of this course.
