POP before relay

550 relaying to <mail@adres.se> prohibited by administrator
The spammers are more evil than ever and we regret that we have to
strengthen our defences and make life for employees and students at the
university more difficult by not allowing any
relay.
You will experience this problem if you are:
- connected to the Internet outside the University of Bergen network
(ie using a commercial Internet service-provider)
- and sending mail using mailservers at the University of Bergen as
outgoing SMTP-server
- and sending mail to non-uib.no addresses
To solve the problem, you have to:
- First: Check your inbox using a mail-client like Eudora, Netscape or Outlook
- Then: Send your pre-written messages.
For employed with account on "alf":
To be allowed sending mail through servers like smtp.uib.no or
alf.uib.no with an email address ending with uib.no from an external
connection, first you have to identify yourself. You can identify
yourself by checking your inbox (reading mail) with your mail-client
(Outlook, Netscape, Eudora) towards pop.uib.no
(alf.uib.no), or with an imap-client towards imap.uib.no (alf.uib.no).
smtp.uib.no will then allow the IP-number to send (relay) messages for the next
fifteen minutes.
For students with account on "rasmus":
You should configure your mail program (Outlook, Netscape, Eudora) to
use smtp.student.uib.no (rasmus.uib.no) as the outgoing mailserver (SMTP),
and before sending mail you should check you inbox on rasmus. You can
use either POP or IMAP.
If you dont have an account neither on alf nor rasmus, you should
not use smtp.uib.no nor smtp.student.uib.no as your outgoing mailserver
from outside the network of the University of Bergen (129.177.0.0/16).
You will not experience these problems if you are using
our dialup service or
webmail.
