Printer installation in Windows
This article will show you how to install a new printer in Windows. The method is applicable both to set up a printer on the computer labs and with your personal laptop. Be aware that you might not have sufficient access to install printers on some of the computer labs.
Procedure
First you need to localize the printer menu. You can go directly via Start - Printers and Faxes or via Start - Control Panel.
Enter the menu by clicking on the Printers and Faxes icon.
In this window you will see the printers that are set up with the computer you are currently working on. If you look at the example shown above you will notice a little mark next to the printer named eplet on io. This indicates that this currently is the default printer. Hence if you want your printouts on another printer you have to actively change this in the printer menu.
Note also the two other "printers", Adobe PDF and Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. These are not physical printers, but rather programs that will produce pictures of the documents you wish to print. These pictures can be printed on a regular printer later. These formats (most commonly .pdf) are often used to send documents that the recipient can be able to read even if he or she does not possess the software used to read the original documents. Most printing offices also prefer to get pdf-files rather than files from a text editor.
Install a new printer
To install a new printer, press the Add new printer in the top left corner.
The wizard will then start up and give you the following picture:
Chose to install a network printer and click next. Note that the option of a local printer is what you use if you have a printer physically connected to your computer.
The wizard will now ask you for the name of the printer that you wish to install. Chose the second option Connect to this printer and type in the path for the printer you wish to connect. Note that the paths are differs from Gløshaugen to Dragvoll
Gløshaugen
All the printers in general computer labs has a name that starts with \\printhost\, which is the printserver for all computers running Windows. You find the complete name by adding the computer lab's name and "laser" after \\printhost\.
Example: In the computer lab called Gombe the printer is called \\printhost\gombelaser.
Dragvoll
All the printers on the general computer labs have the same path. \\titan\dragvollsaler
Note also that the path of the printer is usually specified on the actual printer.
Click next, and the wizard will now ask for you user name and password.
Use the user name and password that you use on NTNU. Note that you have to write win-ntnu-no\username, type your password and click next.
If you have sufficient access to this printer you will now be asked if you want to set this printer as a default printer, and this is the printer that you are going to use for most of your printouts you chose yes. Click finish and you're set.
