Windows 95 modem guide

Copy of these pages are available for loan at "Orakeltjenesten". Please come to our office.

Introduction

Bundled with Windows 95 there are some software that should easily set up everything you need to use "Oppringtjenesten". For full use of the functionality, you need Windows 95 Plus!, which contains some extra functions, but they are not neccessary. The Plus! package contains the following additional functions:

You need to be aware that some of the pictures used in this guide may be taken from the norwegian version of Windows 95.

1. Key figures

The information you need to set up your connection is as follows:

kode #1

	Student: Employee:
	Phone number: 73 55 70 00 73 59 09 50
	Nameserver: 129.241.190.190 and 129.241.7.7 129.241.190.190 and 129.241.7.7
	Mailserver: pop.stud.ntnu.no Depending on department
	Newsserver: news.ntnu.no news.ntnu.no
 	Domain: stud.ntnu.no depending on department

2. Installing "External log on"

The first thing we do is to make sure that "External logon" is installed. This is a built in feature of Windows 95, but not everyone has installed it. You may therefore have to use the Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskettes. Choose the "Start-button" at the bottom lefthand corner of the screen, then click on "Settings and Control Panel".

startmenu

Double click on "Add/Remove programs". After this you click on the part of the dialogue box that says "Installing Windows". You will then see what parts of Windows 95 that are currently installed on your computer.

addremove

Double click on "Communication" and put a check by "External log on", if it is not already checked.

communication

Click "OK" twice, so that you leave "Add/remove" programs".

3. Installing networksupport.

Afterwards you double click on "Network" in the Control Panel, so that the following window appears.

networkconfig

In this dialogue box, there might be some networkcomponents already installed. If you don't already have "Driver for dial-up networking" installed, clik the button "Add...".

networkcomponent

In the next dialogue box you check "Card" and click on the "Add..."-button. By setting up a "Card", you are telling Windows 95 what you want to use to connect your computer to the network. In this instance it is a modem, so you choose "Microsoft".

networkcard

Then you click on "OK". Windows will now install software for networkconnections through modem and will also install support for a few often used versions of networks.
The only thing we need to communicate with Internet is the card itself and the protocol TCP/IP. Therefore you should choose the "Add..."-button to install this protocol. In the dialogue box where you choose protocols, you select "Microsoft" in the first list and then "TCP/IP" in the second.

select_protocol

Then you click "OK". Since we don't need any other networkcomponents then "Driver for dial-up networking" and "TCP/IP", you should remove any other networkcomponents that you don't need, like "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX-compatible protocol". You do this by selecting the component(s) you wish to remove and then click "Remove".

network_installed

Finally all the networkcomponents shown in the above picture should now be installed.

4. Configure networksupport

The next step is to insert some specific information, and we start with the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol. Click on TCP/IP, and then the "Properties"-button. In the dialogue box that then appears you have several choices, but we only need to change "Configuration of DNS".
The most important thing we do now is to insert which servers for DNS we shall use. The DNS-servers translate servernames to serrvernumbers, so that we can use names such as storm.stud.ntnu.no instead of the numbercode 129.241.56.11.
You should enter two nameservers into the list. First you enter the address 129.241.190.190 and clik "Add..". Then you enter the address 129.241.7.7.
Area should be filled in with "stud.ntnu.no" for students (depending on department for employees") and Host must be filled in with something. The Host field should contain your computer name, however your PC will be given a name on connection, so the Host field have no practical meaning to us.

tcpip1

5. Configure your modem-connection

The last part of the installation involves setting up how the modem-connection is configured. Double click on "My Computer" and then on "External log on".

external

Double click on "Make new connection" and you will then be guided through the setup of a new modem connection. This include makeing a name for the connection ("NTNU Oppringt" should be fitting), choosing the correct modem and entering of the phone number to the machine you want to connect to. (The terminalservers of Oppringtjenesten).

connection

The phone number you should enter is 73557000 for students and 73590950 for employees. You also need to select Norway (47) as country number, but you don't need to enter an area code.
When you have been guided through the setup of a new modem connection, a new icon will appear in the "Dial-up networking"-window.

external2

Now click on the righthand mouse button over the "NTNU Oppringt" icon and choose "Properties" to setup details about the NTNU-connection.

Dialup-properties

Here you need to remove the check by "Use country and area code".
In the student cities you need to dial 0 to get an outside line. This is done by adding "0," in front of the phone number, so that it says for instance "0,73557000". This makes the computer dial 0, and then wait a second before the rest of the number is dialed.
Then click the on the button "Configure...". Select the part of the dialogure box called "Alternatives", and place a check by "Show terminal window after dial-up". We need this for when we are going to test the setup.

modem-alternatives

Click "OK" and then click on "Servertype..".

servertypes

Here only "Activate software compression" and "TCP/IP" needs to be checked.
Then click on "TCP/IP-settings...".

tcpip2

Here you need to uncheck "Use IP header compression" and check "Use default gateway on remote network". Then you need to "Specify name server addresses" and enter the addresses 129.241.190.190 as primary DNS and 129.241.7.7 as secondary DNS. Now we have finished the setup and you can click on "OK" until you have exited the properties for the connection.

6. Testing the setup

The routine to connect to Oppringtjenesten will now be to double click on the connection (NTNU Oppringt) in the window for "Dial-up networking". In the dialogue box that then appears there is an opportunity to enter your username and password, but now that we are going to just test the setup, you don't need to enter anything here. By clicking the button "Connect" you start the modem, and the connection itself can be tested.

connect

After the modem has received an answer, a window will appear where the terminalserver asks for username and password.

terminal

Enter your username and password, when these are approved, the terminalserver will answer with the name of the terminalserver you have entered (for instance: "borg"). Now enter the command "ppp" and push Enter. This will start the ppp protocol, and we want Windows to take control, therefore you click the button "Continue" or "Fortsett" in norwegian.

connected

If everything is setup correctly, a dialogue box will appear that tells that you are logged on, and a clock starts running to tell you have long you have been connected. If you now want to start useing Internet programs such as Netscape or InternetExplorer, you are ready to go. Now we can go on with configuring the log on to happen automatically.

7. Setting up a automatic logon script.

Windows 95 has support for logon script, but the programm for such scripts must be installed and configured. The program "Script tool for dial-up networking" is on your Windows 95 CD-ROM. To investigate if you already have this program installed, go to the control panel then double click on "Add/Remove programs". After this you select the part of the dialogue box named "Installing Windows" and double click on "Accessories". If "Scripting tool" is installed on your version of Windows you will se it here. If not then put a check by the program and install it.
Those who might not have the program can get it for free here.
This is a selfextracting file that you can extract in an empty folder by doucle clicking on the file. After you do this, you can install the tool by right-clicking on the file Rnaplus.inf and select "Install" from the menu.
When "Scripting tool" is installed, you can start the program from the startmenu by selecting Programs, Accessories, and then "Scrip tool for dial-up networking".

script

We are now going to make a script that makes connecting both easier and automatic. Click "Browse" and load the script login.scp. You can also type the name of the script and then click "Edit" to enter the information manually. The contents of the file Login-script is shown below and the script works for both students and employees.

kode #2

   	; Start skript
   	proc main
	   transmit "ppp^M"
	   ; Ferdig med skript
	   endproc

Here lines with ; in the beginning are just comments. These lines are not neccessary, but gives a better overview of what the script actually does.
Then you click "Close" and the setup of the script is finished.

terminalwindow_off

Now you need to switch off "Show terminalwindow after dial-up" under Alternatives to Configuration in Properties for NTNU Oppringt under "Dial-up networking" (you may want to make a shortcut to this icon, so that it is more accessible). This time you need to enter your username and password in the dialogue box before you choose "Connect". The rest of the connecting procedure will now be automatic.

You can locate various Internet programs at these links.

9. Tricks and tips

Installing a new version of "Dial-up networking"

Microsoft has improved Dial-up networking in their newest version of the ISDN accelerator pack. This upgrade of Dial-up networking is in English, but works for norwegian versions of Windows 95 aswell. The upgrade can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUNetworking/dun13win95/Default.asp here you also find information on how to install the upgrade.

communication_isdn

Even though you don't need ISDN-support in Windows, you can install this pack and then remove the ISDN-component in "Add/Remove programs" in the Control Panel. You do this by removing the check by "Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack" in "Communication" under "Installing Windows".

How to turn off the "Connecting"-box

If you have installed the latest version of Dial-up networking (see above) you don't need to see the "Connecting"-box every time you wish to establish a connection.

connections

You do this by choosing "Settings..." from the "Connections" menu in the "Dial-up networking"-window.

dialup-config

Here you should be able to turn off "Prompt for information before dialing".

10. When you get error messages...

Some error messages may appear from Windows 95. Suggestions to soloutions to some of them are given below:

Incompatible network protocols

"Unable to establish a set of compatible network protocols as specified in the setup for Network".

In Windows 95, you may sometimes get this message, and it may be for various reasons:

Cannot connect to servers outside the ntnu.no - domain.

"A network error occurred: unable to connect to server (TCP Error: No route to host). This server may be down or unreachable. Try connecting again later."
This error message will appear if you are not able to connect to servers that are outside the ntnu.no - domain. To resolve this problem, use the righthand mouse-button to click on the icon for the connection and then choose "Properties" from the menu that appears. Then select "Servertype..." and then "TCP/IP-settings...". In the bottom of this dialogue box you should then put a check by "Use standard gateway in external network".
If it is still not working, once again go through this guide again, and make espescially sure that you have entered the correct "name-server adresses". If it still is not working, contact the Orakeltjenesten.
