FrameMaker
General info
FrameMaker is a text editor well suited for educational documents. It's also a Desktop Publishing/Page Layout program, that helps you make dokuments that looks professional and are easy to read. The authors have also optimized it so that what you see on the screen looks exactly the same way when you print it. The text is spread throughout several files and put together through a book-function. There are no limitations to the documents size or the amount of files the document can be divided into. FrameMaker is often used to make documents with a very large amount of text, i.e. technical documentation or manuals for companies.
Framemaker is available for Windows, Unix og MacOS. The documents you make can easily be opened on any of the other platforms. You can also save to Word, PDF, HTML, RTF and Word Perfect formats if you like.
FrameMaker is especially suited for:
- Large documents (PHD's, majors, compendiums).
- Documents featuring illustrations. It's capable of importing graphics from many formats and import results from visualization programs. The graphics can be stored as a separate file, which mean that you can avoid having one big file.
- Mathematical documents. The program has its own math-editor.
- Documents that need illustrations, it has a good drawing tool.
- Documents that combine the points above, it's easy to combine them into one presentation.
NTNU license
NTNU has a site license for FrameMaker 5.5.6, which means that every student or employee at NTNU can use this program freely, on both private computers and on the NTNU campuses. You can get FrameMaker here.
