Microsoft Outlook Express is the free version of Microsoft Outlook, and can be used to read e-mail and news on Windows and Macintosh-computers. You can find more information about the program on ITEAs pages on Outlook Express. The program is a part of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
When you start Outlook Express for the first time, an "Internet Connection Wizard" will appear. It will guide you through the process of setting up the program. If you need to activate the connection wizard in an already active installation of Outlook Express, you can do this by choosing Tools->Accounts... in the menu bar, and click Add->Mail....
Here you should type your name as you would like it to appear for e-mail recipients. Click "Next" to continue.
Type your e-mail address, and click "Next" to continue.
Here you choose IMAP as incoming mail server type. The name of the incoming mail server is imap.stud.ntnu.no for students, and imap.ansatt.ntnu.no for employees. Outgoing mail server must be set to smtp.stud.ntnu.no for students, and smtp.ansatt.ntnu.no for employees. Click Next to continue.
Note: If you want to use another e-mail provider than NTNU, but still want to read your e-mail at NTNU, you can set incoming e-mail server as above. But since NTNU's e-mail servers don't support e-mail relay services, you will have to set you e-mail provider's address as outgoing mail server.
In the field Account Name you should type your NTNU username. If you don't have a username, you could get one at Orakeltjenesten. If you choose "Remember Password", you will have to type in your password to continue. This will enable you to check your e-mail without typing your password each time. But remember, this also means that anyone that opens Outlook Express on a computer where you are logged on, can have access to your e-mail account without knowing your password. Do not activate the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) option. Click Next to continue.
Now you are almost done setting up your e-mail account. Click "Finish" to close the Internet Connection Wizard. Below you can find some further tips on how to use Outlook Express .
IMAP servers store the e-mail in various e-mail boxes, such as "Inbox" and "Outbox". It is possible to filter your incoming e-mail; your mail will then be sorted and placed in the folders you specify.

This is the general appearance of Outlook Express. Notice that there are two inboxes, one local and one on the IMAP server. The first time you start Outlook Express, there is already an e-mail message in the local folder. This e-mail contains various information about the program, and could be useful to read.
At the bottom left corner of the screen you can see your address book. If no address book is shown, you can push ctrl-alt-b to open it
To import an address book you can choose "File -> Import -> Other Address Book..." menu bar.
Now you have to choose which program to import from. Click "Import" to start the conversion.
If Outlook is able to find your address book, a message will pop up (as shown above). Otherwise, you will be asked if you want to specify the location of the address book manually. If you answer "Yes" to this question, a window as the one shown below will appear
You now have to specify the location of the address book. The default location of Eudora address books is c:\Programfiler\Qualcomm\Eudora Mail\nndbase.txt. Choose the file, and click "Import".
Outlook Express can not import an address book from Pine directly. To do this, you first have to convert the Pine address book to Netscape format. If you don't have Netscape installed on your computer, you can use Interguru's Pine to Netscape Conversion. After conversion, the Address book can be imported as if it came from Netscape
