My research interests and teaching are in computational linguistics and language technology. The following foci can be distinguished.
I am interested in computational models of language behavior. In this modeling tradition, I carried out my Ph.D. research on language generation. I have written a book, together with others, under the title Computational Psycholinguistics.
Practical applications of computational linguistics are usually referred to as language technology. Together with Victoria Rosén and others, I worked on automatic proofreading for Norwegian in the SCARRIE project. I am currently also interested in other text based applications including text summarization and information retrieval.
Computational linguistics profits from an empirical basis. I am coordinating TREPIL, a pilot project on building a treebank for Norwegian. Treebanks are corpora annotated with linguistic structures.
Learning and teaching methods for computational linguistics are another area of interest. I have coordinated the ACO*HUM thematic network project. I have been coordinator of BATMULT and I currently coordinate MULTILINGUA, two research training sites recognized and funded by the EU.
I have co-organized several major international conferences in Bergen: The Future of the Humanities in the Digital Age, EACL'99 and LFG'05, and I will co-organize TLT'07.
I have also been responsible for the Norwegian Documentation Centre for Language Technology.
Besides being professor of computational linguistics at the University of Bergen, I am also a member of the research group for language technology at Unifob AKSIS
