This project theoretically and empirically explores disparities and convergences in views on learning in art museums. The theoretical perspective draws on sociocultural approaches in museum studies that point to the significance of discourse and social interaction for learning. How do sociocultural perspectives on learning relate to contemporary developments in aesthetics, art history, and visual culture studies? What are the implications of a shift in focus from individual cognition to social processes for curatorial practice in art museums? The theoretical contribution of the dissertation is an interdisciplinary, sociocultural perspective on meaning making in art museums that integrates central ideas from contemporary art theory, the learning sciences, and museum studies.
