Objectives and content

The Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences is a study programme focusing on the development, structure, and function of biological systems.

The programme provides advanced understanding of mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal function at molecular, cellular and systems level that are relevant to human health and disease. The programme aims to give the student knowledge and practical skills in research methods that are being used in modern biomedicine and medical biology - being among the cornerstones of modern health care and laboratory diagnostics. The program will also encourage and stimulate critical thinking, ethical reflection, and proficiency in scientific reading and writing.

In our curriculum we regard biomedicine as a branch of medical science that applies biological and other natural science principles, including theories and methods from mathematics, statistics, and informatics, to clinical practice - i.e. translational research. Within this framework the program offers different options for specialization e.g. medical cell biology, human physiology, computational modelling and biomedical imaging.

Admission Requirements

This Master´s Programme is open to self-financing applicants and applicants with a quota scholarship from Makerere University, Uganda. We do not accept quota applicants from any other university.

You need a bachelor's degree in Molecular and/or Cell biology, Biomedicine, Physiology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or the like. You should have a minimum of 80 ECTS in relevant courses, including a minimum of 20 ECTS in chemistry or biochemistry and 20 ECTS in molecular and/or cell biology. Other relevant courses include biology, biotechnology, anatomy, physiology, medical laboratory courses, mathematics, informatics, image sciences and physics.

All applicants will be assessed individually. The selection of students will be based on the following criteria:

  • - Depth and relevance of educational training
  • - Academic results
  • - English proficiency
  • - Year of completion of academic degree (should not be older than 5 years).

For all students, admission to the programme requires that you are in upper secondary division or higher.

English proficiency:

Non-native English speakers must document their English language proficiency. Apply at soknadsweb.uib.no (opens February 1st).

Study Period Abroad

Study period abroad

We encourage students to take parts of their curriculum at foreign educational institutions. The Master¿s programme in Biomedical Sciences is a partner in the Nordic Biomedical Master Network (NordBioMedNet) which includes four partner universities; The Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, Turku University in Finland, University of Eastern Finland and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. You may go on exchange to take courses at these partner universities, lab projects and also the experimental part of the Master¿s project.

You can also go on exchange to other European universities where we have exchange agreements.
