What Can I Apply for
The University of Bergen offers a large number of courses taught in English at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
100-level, 200-level or 300-level
Normally, 100-level courses may only be included at bachelor's level, while 200-level courses may be included at both bachelor's and master's level. 100-level courses and 200-level courses are listed as undergraduate courses. As a rule, 300-level courses may only be incorporated into master's programmes and are listed as postgraduate courses.
Courses for exchange students
Click on each course to check whether the courses you wish to apply for are taught during your study period in Bergen. You can also check number of ECTS credits, if the courses require any previous knowledge etc.
How many credits?
A full work load for one semester is 30 ECTS credits, but we recommend that you choose one or two extra courses in case some of your choices are not approved, if some of the courses have overlapping time schedules etc.
Further queries about courses may be directed to the faculty or department.
How Do I Apply
For information on how to apply for admission, see How to Apply in the UiB Online Application Service "Søknadsweb".
Deadlines
Applications should be completed online no later than:
- 15 May for the autumn semester (August - December)
- 15 October for the spring semester (January - May)
UiB's partner institutions must nominate students in the University of Bergen’s online nomination system, preferably before 15 May and 15 October for the autumn and spring semester respectively.
Your admission process will not be concluded if we do not receive the relevant documents within the specified deadline.
Documentation
Required documents for Erasmus students to upload on SoknadsWeb:
- Offical transcript of records in English or a Scandinavian language issued by your home university with at least 60 ECTS credits. A transcript of records is an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university.
Or, if the above is not available: a translation of your transcript of records in English or a Scandinavian language in addition to an official transcript of records in the original language issued by your home university. We accept a non-official translation if stamped and signed by an officer at the partner university. - Letter of motivation (only applies to applicants to English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages, courses with the code ENG)
- Letter of recommendation (only applies to applicants to English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages, courses with the code ENG)
- Learning Agreement signed by your home university. Please note that the Learning Agreement is issued by your home university.

Language Requirements
In general incoming exchange students do not need to document English language proficiency through a recognised test such as IELTS or TOEFL. But, we strongly recommend that students have a good command of English – a minimum of level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) – in order to follow courses taught in English. The University of Bergen expects that all nominated Erasmus students have been evaluated according to this framework at their home institution.
Please note that some departments may require documentation of English proficiency in order to follow specific courses. Applicants to English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages are required to have a B" level and must read the application requirements under How to Apply in the UiB Online Application Service "Søknadsweb".
Learning Agreements and Arrival/Departure Forms
Application documentation: You must upload a Learning Agreement that is signed by your home university together with the other required documentation. Please note that the Learning Agreement is issued by your home university. UiB will sign and return the Learning Agreement no later than 1 December for the spring semester and 1 July for the autumn semester if you are admitted to the included courses. Please be aware that we can only sign Learning Agreements with courses you have been granted admission to. You will find the courses listed in your Letter of Acceptance.
If the agreement needs to be revised, you must send us a new version or bring it with you to Bergen.
After arrival you can visit the information centre at your faculty to have it signed at semester start-up. If you want to add courses after your arrival in Bergen, you must ask the relevant department or faculty for permission.
Arrival and Departure Forms
Please be aware that the faculty can only sign arrival/departure forms with UiB's official semester dates.
Erasmus Placement/Leonardo da Vinci Placement Students
An Erasmus Placement/Leonardo da Vinci training placement at UiB should be arranged directly between your home institution and the faculty or department where you wish to be placed here at UiB. A Training Agreement must then be arranged between the institutions. We advise you therefore to start early.
Placement students must then apply for administrative admission within the same applications periods as regular exchange students: 15 March-15 May for admission to the autumn semester and 1 September-15 October for admission to the spring semester. The deadlines are final, and applications from students who do not meet the deadline will not be processed.
Training placement applicants must choose 'Erasmus' on the application form, which is available online during the application periods mentioned above. A training placement must last between 3-12 months. Erasmus placement and Leonardo da Vinci placement applicants must follow the same application procedures as regular exchange students with one exception:
- Instead of submitting documentation of exchange status issued by your university, you must send a certified copy of the Training Agreement, which must be signed by your home institution as well as the department/faculty here at UiB where you wish to be placed.
