Admissions

The Division of Student Affairs assesses whether the applicants meet the Higher Education Entrance Qualification for all types of admission to UiB.

In order to be admitted as a student who has the opportunity to sit examinations at UiB, you must fulfil the admissions criteria set by the Ministry of Education and Research in the Regulations concerning admission to higher education, which is enabled by the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The admission requirement is normally a Higher Education Entrance Qualification. The requirements for a Higher Education Entrance Qualification are detailed in the admission regulation.

The Division of Student Affairs assesses the Higher Education Entrance Qualification as well as prior learning and work experience, and provides guidance.

Undergraduate admissions
Undergraduate programmes normally build on an Upper Secondary School education, and do not presume or require another higher education as part of the admission requirements. Admissions to undergraduate programmes at universities and university colleges are coordinated nationally through the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS - national admissions model).

The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for the processing of applications for undergraduate programmes at the University of Bergen.

Transferring between programmes of study (Norwegian)
Students who are admitted to one programme of study can apply for a transfer to some other programmes. There are opportunities for internal transfers between programmes in the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Psychology, and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Local admissions
The Faculties have the main responsibility for admission to master's programmes and other local admissions, including admissions to the professional programme in psychology,(Norwegian) the one-year programme in educational theory and practice and
doctoral programmes. Admissions are made by the Faculty in question.

The Division of Student Affairs offers user support for StudentWeb and FS in addition to assessing the Higher Education Entrance Qualification.

Continuing and further education
The Centre for Continuing Education (EVU) is in charge of admission to continuing and further education programmes. Please note that the admission requirements for continuing and further education differ from those for ordinary programmes.

International admissions
The Division of Student Affairs has the administrative responsibility for admitting international students applying from abroad. This applies to admissions through the Quota Scheme, for English-medium master's programmes and to admissions through exchange agreements and programmes (information in English).

By clicking on the links for "exchange student admissions" and "master's degree admissions" on the right, you can find more relevant information if you are working on this.

Norwegian language course
The Division of Student Affairs also has the administrative responsibility for admissions to the Norwegian language courses at UiB.

Admission to individual courses
The University of Bergen does not admit students to individual courses. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

In some Faculties, students who are admitted to a course or specific programme of study at a university or university college in Norway can apply to take individual courses as a visiting student (Norwegian)

In some Faculties, specific courses are also open to students from other programmes at UiB.

Students who have completed a degree at UiB can retain their admission by applying for a fixed-term admission (post-admission) (Norwegian) that entitles the student to take individual courses. The scheme does not include students admitted to one-year programmes or law at UiB.
