A main focus for our research is and will be translational medical research focusing on cancer, neurosciences as well as the circulatory system. The research is carried with modern methods in molecular and cellular biology, proteomics and a wide range of methods for biomedical imaging among those MRI and PET.
 
We have an international staff and continuously aim to improve the quality of our research and expand our research focus through project collaboration with highly competent international research centers. It is a clear ambition that our best researchers shall be at the international research front.  

Our teaching of students in medicine, dentistry and MSc (medical biology, pharmacy, nutrition and nanoscience) aims at providing research-based education. In addition to educating well qualified candidates, we focus on recruitment and training of young researchers and research talents. Around 100 PhD candidates and postdoctoral research fellows receive their training in a cross disciplinary, international and highly competent research environment in one of the country’s most modern research environment.

The department has several research centers among these are two K.G. Jebsen-Centers for medical research, and the department also participates in Center for Cancer Biomarkers (CCBIO) which a Norwegian Center of Excellence funded by Research Council of Norway. In addition several researchers at the department participate in networks financed by the European Union and NordForsk.
