The research group was established in 2008, and is administrated and financed in partnership with Hordaland County Council. The group is organized as a network consisting of staff members of the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetical studies and colleges at other universities, museums and public authorities in Norway and the Nordic countries, and currently, university contacts in Russia and Turkey.

Seminars, conferences and activities are related to research on architecture, recent urban development and current areas of research within the research group. The annual Nordhagen conference, named after professor emeritus and architectural historian Per Jonas Nordhagen, takes place each year in October/November. In 2014 the date is 31st October.
