Welcome to the Department of Physical Education, Sports and Outdoor Education at Volda University College, Norway.
We focus on three major subjects:
Physical education for teachers
Sports education in general
Outdoor life/outdoor education in four seasons; sailing, hiking, mountain skiing, glacier hiking and security
We offer introductory courses which qualify you for teaching at primary and secondary school levels. You may also continue and specialize within selected sports and outdoor life/outdoor education. You may attend skiing courses qualifying you as an authorized skiing instructor in telemark, cross country, slalom and snowboard. The outdoor life courses range from learning to sail wooden boats ("færings" - descending directly from viking ships), hiking, mountain skiing in winter to glacier training on the extensions of the Jostedal glacier in summer.
Physical Education – Outdoor Life/outdoor education: Friluftsliv. This education has as its objective the guarding – and developing – of a way of living in nature which has a long tradition in our country. However, the modern form of life in nature – friluftsliv – has its roots in the Romantic Movement. The range of experiences of nature and experiential learning in different nature environments occupies a central position for several reasons: Norway (and Volda) has a great variety of nature. Children and young people must become familiar with this nature, learn how to use it, and know how to enjoy and roam about in it in a relatively safe way. “Friluftsliv” can provide an alternative experience of life. It cannot be categorized as sport, tourisme, excursion in natural science, or as an outdoor activity. It concerns wandering and living in nature by simple means, and – with a background in experiences and experience – to open up for reflection and debate on alternatives of values and actions in our time. Last, but not least, the aim is to create the positive experiences of nature and the suitable challenges and exciting moments both for the individual human being, as well as for the group fellowship.
You need not be a super athlete, but should be in reasonably good shape to benefit from the classes. In return you will take home memories from unforgettable experiences in the wild scenery surrounding Volda University College. The landscape varies from deep fjords and deserted islands to some of the most breathtaking alpine scenery in Norway, known as the "Alps of Sunnmøre" - "Sunnmørsalpane" in Norwegian.
This is our location, in the north-west of Norway:
