European Parliament elections
The European parliament is the parliamentary body of the European Union. The European parliament is directly elected by EU citizens every five years. Today, it comprises 785 representatives from the 27 member countries. The allocation of the seats is based primarily, but not entirely, on population size of the member states. The table below shows the allocation of the seats by countries following the accession of Bulgaria and Romania in January 2007. In the next European elections in 2009 the total number of Members of the European Parliament will be decreased from 785 to 736. Romania is to hold its first EP elections before the end of 2007, the current MEPs have been nominated by the governement and will serve until an election is held.
