From research to application
Innovation has recently entered as one of the main activities of the
university, in addition to research and education. I am working to
ensure that innovation, commercial insights, and technical and
industrial research are appreciated and integrated into the
university's strategies for research, education, and recruiting.
One starting point is to demonstrate how industrial collaboration and
market insight may be an important source for good, scientific,
problems, that can also result in high-impact basic
research - as demonstrated, for example, by my own commercial endeavors.
Ignis Photonyx
I spent the years 2000-2002 as VP of Technology and VP of Business
development in Photonyx, a micro-technology company developing a
unique polymer-based dynamic diffraction grating. The technology is
used to develop dynamic components for fiber-optical networks, and has
further potential in display and other technologies based on dynamic
diffractive optics.
I was instrumental in funding the company and in developing
the technology platform for the company (See US patent 6897995). The
company provides one of a few success stories of the commercialization
of research, and is listed on the Norwegian stock exchange (ticker
Ignis).
Commercialization
My experience in commercialization and industry collaboration extends
further. I am also first author of the patent WO75588, which is based
on 10 years of collaboration with Conoco, and is the basis of a
commercial software package developed in collaboration with Conoco.
I was co-initiator of the \$1 USD "Petroleum implications of sill intrusions"
project funded by more than 10 petroleum companies, which also had
siginificant scientific impact.
I also have extended experience in evaluating the
commercialization potential in start-up companies.
Consulting
I have experience in technical consulting in physics (thermal physics,
statistical physics, complex systems, polymer physics), photonics and
micro-technology (components for telecommunications networks,
medical-applications of micro-technology, and sensors), geo-sciences
(volcanic basins, tectonic faulting, transport, fracturing, and
environmental hazards), and computing (large scale parallel
computation on scalable parallel machines and clusters, development of
a simulation package for faulting in reservoir systems).
