Based on 6 Logitech x-540 systems (leaving out the center channel speakers) and 2 AudioFire 12 sound cards.

The two sound cards can be used in Max/MSP by using the aggregate audio devices functionality in OS X. NB: you have to be logged in as an administrator to be able to set this up. You also need to select the same sampling rate in both sound cards, otherwise they can't be aggregated. Then the two devices should show up as one aggregated device in Max/MSP.
