PhD Course:

Analysing Qualitative Text

10 ects

 5th - 8th November 2008

Place: Bodoe Regional University.

The course will focus primarily on ways of analysing transcribed and other written texts (e.g. interviews, field notes, documents), but will also touch upon other types of qualitative date. The course will address the following questions:

  • What constitutes or counts as qualitative data?
  • How should qualitative data be organized and stored?
  • How can we work with and make sense of qualitative data?
  • How can we construct and present analytical explanations on the bases of our data?

The course will combine lectures and discussions both in plenary and in seminars.

The course is intended for PhD students within the social sciences, but PhD students from other fields may also apply. To obtain 10 ects credits PhD students must attend the course and hand in a paper of 15-20 pages for evaluation, no later than December 15th. The paper will be commented and given the final accreditation by two among the lecturers and course leaders.

Students should no later than 15th of October hand in a short paper (max. 2 pages) about the topic for a paper to be discussed in seminars. The paper should preferably be in English, but we do accept papers in a Scandinavian language. Each student will be required to give a short presentation (10 min) about their topic and ideas for a paper in a seminar.
